Glen Huntly is a small suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is located approximately 11 kilometres southeast of Melbourne's central business district. The suburb is named after Glen Huntly, a small village in Scotland.
Early Settlement
The area that is now Glen Huntly was originally inhabited by the Boonwurrung people for thousands of years before European settlement. It was part of the Port Phillip Bay area, which was first explored by Europeans in 1802. In 1835, John Pascoe Fawkner established a settlement at nearby Williamstown, and shortly thereafter, other Europeans began to settle in the area.
The first land sales in Glen Huntly were in 1853. The suburb was originally called 'Glenhuntly' with no space, and then later changed to Glen Huntly. The area was predominantly used for farming and was also home to a number of early market gardens.
Development of the Suburb
Glen Huntly began to develop more rapidly in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1882, the Glen Huntly railway station was opened, providing direct access to Melbourne's central business district. This led to an increase in population, and the suburb began to develop more housing and businesses.
One of the most notable early buildings in Glen Huntly is the Glen Huntly Hotel, which was built in 1887. The hotel was an important meeting place for locals and served as a hub for the community.
